How Deep to Plant Every Seed (Chart)
The rule is 2–3 times the seed’s diameter. Lettuce goes on the surface. Beans go 1 inch deep. Here’s the chart for every common variety.
Too deep, and the seed runs out of energy. Too shallow, and it dries out.

The Rule
2-3× the seed’s diameter. Bigger seed = deeper.
Light-Dependent Seeds
These need light to germinate:
- Lettuce
- Basil
- Some flowers
Press them into the surface. Don’t bury.
Common Questions
Why does depth matter? Too deep = runs out of energy. Too shallow = dries out.
What if I planted too deep? Wait 14 days. If nothing, replant.
What if too shallow? Water gently. Seeds may wash away.
Do all seeds follow the rule? Most. Check the packet for exceptions.
Can I just sprinkle seeds? For lettuce and basil, yes. Others need depth.
What about tiny seeds? Press into surface. Don’t cover.
