If your seeds haven’t sprouted after 10 days, it’s almost always one of 7 causes. This decision tree identifies which one in under 2 minutes.
Most seeds sprout in 5–14 days. If yours haven’t, something specific went wrong — it’s rarely “bad luck.”
First: How Long Has It Been?

1. Did the soil stay consistently moist?
- No → Cause #1: Dried out

- Deeper than 2× seed size → Cause #3: Too deep

The 7 Causes (In Detail)
Cause #1: Soil Dried Out (Most Common)
Seeds need constant moisture. If the soil dried out for even 12 hours during the first week, the seed dies.
Fix: Water from the bottom. Set the pot in a tray of water for 10 minutes.
Cause #2: Soil Too Wet
Overwatering kills more seeds than underwatering. Wet soil grows fungus, and the seed rots.
Fix: Water only when the top inch is dry. Use a pot with drainage holes.
Cause #3: Planted Too Deep
Seeds have limited energy. Buried too deep, they run out before reaching light.
The rule: Plant seeds 2–3 times their diameter deep.
Cause #4: Too Cold
Most seeds germinate between 65–75°F (18–24°C). Below 50°F (10°C), most go dormant.
Fix: Start indoors at room temperature.
Cause #5: Too Hot
Above 85°F (29°C), some seeds die. Lettuce especially.
Fix: Start seeds in a shaded spot.
Cause #6: Damping Off
Seedlings sprouted, then collapsed at the soil line. This is a fungal disease.
Fix: Improve airflow. Water less.
Cause #7: Dead Seeds
Seeds have a shelf life. Stored in heat and humidity, that life gets short.
Test: Place 10 seeds on a damp paper towel. Keep moist for 7 days.
When to Give Up
If it’s been 15+ days and nothing has sprouted, replant.
