The Great Basil Downy Mildew of 2025
Downy mildew killed all 6 of my basil plants in 10 days. There’s no cure. Here’s how to recognize it and prevent it.
What Happened
Day 1: Yellow patches on upper leaves. Day 3: Gray fuzzy growth on the underside. Day 5: Leaves dropped. Plants wilted. Day 10: All 6 plants dead.
What It Was
Downy mildew. A water mold that spreads through air. No cure.
How to Recognize It
- Yellow patches on upper leaf surface
- Gray/purple fuzzy growth on lower leaf surface
- Leaves drop despite moist soil
- Spreads fast (days, not weeks)
What I Did
Nothing worked. I removed the plants. Bagged them. Discarded the soil.
What I Learned
- There’s no cure. Remove immediately.
- It spreads through air. Isolate other plants.
- Don’t compost. The spores survive.
- Prevention: Airflow, dry leaves, resistant varieties.
What I Do Now
- Water from bottom only
- Small fan on basil
- Check undersides weekly
- Plant resistant varieties (Eleonora, Amazel)
