My Winter Indoor Garden: 4 Months of Data
I tracked my indoor garden for 4 months. Here’s what grew, what died, and what I learned about winter growing.
What I Grew
- Basil (grow light)
- Parsley (south window)
- Chives (south window)
- Mint (grow light)
- Lettuce (grow light)
The Results
| Plant | Light | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Basil | Grow light | Thrived |
| Parsley | South window | Slow but alive |
| Chives | South window | Thrived |
| Mint | Grow light | Thrived |
| Lettuce | Grow light | 2 harvests |
What I Learned
- Grow lights are essential. South windows aren’t enough in winter.
- 14-16 hours of light. Not 24.
- Water less. Indoor air is dry, but evaporation is slow.
- Fertilize monthly. At 1/4 strength.
What I’ll Do Differently
- Start earlier (October, not November).
- Add a second grow light.
- Grow more lettuce.
